Use the catalog hierarchy as the baseline, then add contextual merchandising paths where they help users.
Primary navigation should expose major categories and important subcategories. Breadcrumbs should create a stable parent relationship from product back through its category path.
Within category pages, link directly to canonical product URLs and avoid routing through tracking parameters. Important subcategories should be linked from relevant parent categories with descriptive labels.
Add curated modules for relationships that the hierarchy alone cannot express: compatible accessories, alternatives, buying guides, related use cases, popular brands, or "complete the setup" paths. These links should reflect real shopping behavior, not SEO-only crosslinking.
Prioritize strategic products with placement and category structure rather than adding hundreds of footer links. If a product matters commercially but is buried 12 clicks deep, fix the taxonomy or merchandising.
For editorial content, link into the most relevant commercial destination when the reader reaches a decision point. Likewise, category/product pages can link back to guides when users need education.
Audit orphan and low-link products regularly, especially after inventory/catalog changes.
A strong ecommerce internal-link graph mirrors how products belong together and how customers shop. Search authority follows the same useful paths rather than a separate artificial network.
