Use the redirect code that matches the intended duration of the move. Search engines can interpret both, but clear intent reduces ambiguity and keeps maintenance understandable.

1. Use 301/308 when the old URL is permanently replaced and you want users and search systems to adopt the new destination.

2. Use 302/307 when the original URL is expected to return, such as a short promotion, temporary outage path, or controlled test.

3. Do not leave temporary redirects in place for years. If the move becomes permanent, update the status and internal links.

4. Avoid chains. Update internal links so they point directly to the final URL instead of relying on redirects for normal navigation.

5. Keep redirects relevant. Sending every retired page to the homepage can create poor user experience and soft-404-like behavior.

6. Audit migration redirects after launch using the original URL inventory, not just new-site crawling.

The code matters less than consistency between business intent, destination relevance, internal links, sitemaps, and long-term maintenance.
