Do not change established URLs only for cosmetic reasons. A shorter slug is rarely worth migration risk if the existing URL is stable, indexable, and performing well.
1. Change the slug when there is a durable reason: incorrect taxonomy, rebrand, merged content, major information-architecture change, or unusable legacy format.
2. Map the old URL directly to the new equivalent with a permanent server-side redirect.
3. Update every internal link, canonical, sitemap entry, hreflang reference, schema URL, and navigation path to the new URL.
4. Preserve query parameters needed for campaigns or functionality intentionally.
5. Avoid redirect chains by pointing older historical URLs directly to the new final destination when possible.
6. Monitor Search Console, logs, rankings, and landing-page traffic for the changed URL set.
URL cleanliness is secondary to stability. Change slugs when architecture genuinely improves, then treat the change as a small migration.
