Search engines can handle slash variants, but allowing both to resolve independently creates unnecessary duplicate URLs and mixed signals.

1. Choose one URL convention for directory-like paths and apply it consistently.

2. Redirect the nonpreferred variant directly to the preferred URL with one hop.

3. Use the preferred form in internal links, sitemaps, canonicals, hreflang, schema URLs, and marketing links.

4. Check server behavior for files and directories separately; do not create rules that break real assets.

5. Test query strings and case sensitivity so normalization does not drop needed parameters or create loops.

6. Crawl the site after changes and flag any internal links that still point to redirected slash variants.

The SEO benefit is not that one slash style ranks better. The benefit is a single, predictable URL for each piece of content.
