Products have color, size, material, and configuration variants. When does a variant deserve its own indexable URL, and when should variants consolidate to the parent product?

Give a variant its own indexable URL only when it behaves like a distinct search destination. The decision should be based on demand, content differentiation, inventory, and user intent - not simply on whether the commerce platform can generate a URL.

A separate variant page is more defensible when the variant has meaningful search demand, materially different attributes, unique images or specifications, stable inventory, and a user would reasonably land directly on that configuration. Examples can include model generations, storage capacities, materials, or product types that people search independently.

Consolidate variants when the differences are minor choices inside the same intent, such as routine size or color selection with no distinct content value. In that case, maintain one canonical product URL and let UI state handle the selected option.

Implementation checks:
- every indexable variant needs unique, accurate metadata and product data;
- canonical tags must reflect the chosen strategy consistently;
- internal links and sitemaps should include only URLs you actually want indexed;
- structured data should describe the purchasable configuration accurately;
- out-of-stock behavior should not create mass soft-404s for temporarily unavailable variants.

Also watch analytics and Search Console. If separate variant URLs continually collapse to the same query set and create duplication, consolidation may be cleaner. If the market clearly searches variants independently, forcing all signals to one generic parent can hide useful landing pages.
