Publish evidence others have a reason to reference, then participate in the real information ecosystem around your market.
Original research is one of the strongest assets: benchmarks, surveys, anonymized platform data, case-study findings, methodology papers, or recurring industry reports. Make the methodology transparent so journalists and experts can evaluate the evidence.
Develop identifiable subject-matter experts. Author pages, conference talks, interviews, contributed expert commentary, podcasts, standards groups, and professional associations create independent context around the people behind the brand.
Earn coverage through useful stories rather than link requests. Provide data, expert interpretation, or a genuinely newsworthy product/industry development.
Maintain accurate profiles on authoritative industry databases, marketplaces, partner directories, and professional organizations where the brand legitimately belongs.
For software/products, documentation and reference material can become citation-worthy when it clearly explains implementation details, limitations, and technical concepts.
Avoid fabricated “best of” sites, paid mass placements, fake statistics, and circular citations across owned properties. They may create volume but weak corroboration.
Track which external domains are cited by AI answers for your target topics. The goal is not to copy their backlink strategy; it is to understand which evidence ecosystems the answer engines currently trust.
Authority for AI search is largely the same defensible authority humans value: original evidence, recognized expertise, independent references, and consistent facts across credible sources.
