Make the page easy to understand at both document and passage level.

Lead important sections with a direct answer before expanding into nuance. Use descriptive headings that match real questions and concepts. Keep paragraphs focused so a retrieved passage contains enough context to be useful without requiring three preceding sections.

Support claims with evidence. Original data, transparent methodology, primary-source references, clear definitions, and dated updates give a system more reason to trust and corroborate the content.

Use explicit entity names. Pronoun-heavy prose and vague references are harder to extract reliably. State which product, organization, location, standard, or process a claim refers to.

Keep technical signals clean: canonical URL, indexability, stable rendering, meaningful title/H1, and crawlable internal links. Important explanatory text should not appear only after interaction.

Add structured data when it accurately represents the visible page, but do not expect schema alone to create citations.

Avoid bloated “SEO introductions” that delay the answer. A strong pattern is: concise answer → implementation detail → evidence/examples → limitations/edge cases → related concepts.

Finally, monitor which sources AI systems currently cite for your target questions. Compare what those sources provide—original evidence, clear explanations, authority, freshness—rather than copying their wording.

Citation readiness is not “write for robots.” It is publishing precise, self-contained, well-supported information that a system can retrieve and verify with low ambiguity.
