A 200 status only says the server delivered a document. Search engines can still decide the document looks like an error, empty result, unavailable item, or low-value placeholder.

1. Check the visible content. Pages saying “not found,” “no results,” “product unavailable,” or showing only navigation can be classified as soft 404s.

2. Compare the title, H1, and body to valid pages. Generic error templates with 200 responses are a common cause.

3. For truly missing content, return 404 or 410 instead of a branded 200 error page.

4. For temporarily unavailable products or services, keep useful content and alternatives if the URL should remain valuable; otherwise retire it intentionally.

5. Inspect canonical tags and redirects. A page that canonicals to an unrelated destination may also signal that it should not stand alone.

6. Re-test representative URLs in Search Console after correcting the response/content relationship.

The fix is to make HTTP state and page meaning agree. A valid URL should contain a useful destination; an invalid URL should communicate that clearly at the server level.
