Promote facets based on durable demand, inventory stability, uniqueness, and business value.

Start with query research and internal search/filter usage to identify combinations people actually seek. Then check whether the facet produces enough stable inventory and unique context to function as a standalone landing page.

Strategic facets should receive clean URLs, self-canonicals, descriptive titles/H1s, useful category copy where warranted, direct internal links, and selective sitemap inclusion. They should not depend on a session parameter.

Utility facets—sort order, temporary availability flags, tiny inventory combinations, arbitrary price ranges, and combinatorial states—should remain functional for shoppers without becoming an unlimited index surface.

Create rules at the application level. A whitelist or eligibility model is safer than allowing every filter combination and trying to suppress duplicates after the fact.

Watch inventory collapse. An indexable facet that frequently has zero or one product may create unstable thin pages. Define minimum inventory thresholds or fallback behavior.

Use crawl/log data to confirm bots are spending time on promoted facets rather than infinite combinations. Adjust internal links so the indexable subset is clearly reinforced.

The best faceted architecture is intentionally selective: a finite set of useful search destinations built on top of a much larger interactive filtering system.
