Automate transformations while keeping editorial meaning under human control.
On upload, store the original securely, extract dimensions/metadata, and generate derivative sizes appropriate to your design system. Serve responsive srcset/sizes so mobile devices do not download desktop-scale assets unnecessarily. Use modern formats where supported while preserving safe fallbacks.
Set width and height attributes or aspect-ratio rules so layout space is reserved and CLS is minimized. Lazy-load below-the-fold images but avoid delaying the likely LCP/hero image; priority behavior should be template-aware.
Alt text should remain an editorial field because automation cannot reliably know the image's purpose in context. Allow decorative images to use empty alt text intentionally rather than forcing keyword-filled descriptions.
Separate social/Open Graph crops from in-content images when required by the design. Validate that public image URLs are absolute, crawlable where needed, and not protected by expiring editor tokens.
Create deduplication and file-naming policies so reuploads do not create uncontrolled asset sprawl. For client/tenant systems, keep media libraries isolated and enforce storage quotas if needed.
Monitor broken derivatives and oversized originals. A media pipeline should make the performant, accessible output the default without asking editors to understand image compression, responsive breakpoints, or CDN query parameters.
