Most internal search-result URLs should not be treated as indexable landing pages because they are unstable, low-control, and can create large crawl spaces. Curated filter pages are different.
1. Separate user-generated search URLs from intentionally built landing pages.
2. Keep internal search pages out of XML sitemaps and generally use noindex when they should remain accessible but not searchable.
3. Prevent infinite parameter combinations from becoming crawl traps through application-level link controls.
4. If a filter combination has durable demand and useful content, promote it to a stable canonical landing page with unique metadata and internal links.
5. Do not use canonical tags as the only control for millions of search/filter URLs.
6. Monitor server logs to see whether bots are spending excessive time on low-value query parameters.
Index intentional destinations, not arbitrary search states. A stable curated page is much easier to maintain and evaluate than an open-ended query URL.
