Classify parameters by function before choosing a control. Different parameter types need different treatment.
Tracking parameters such as campaign IDs usually do not change page content. Internal links should avoid them, canonical should point to the clean URL, and server or edge rules can sometimes strip known parameters when doing so will not break attribution.
Sort-order and presentation parameters may change order without changing the underlying item set. These are usually poor index targets. Keep canonical signals on the primary category and prevent internal navigation from generating unlimited crawl combinations.
Filter parameters are more nuanced. Some combinations can represent valuable long-tail landing pages; others create near-infinite duplication. Promote strategic filters to clean, indexable URLs with self-canonicals and dedicated internal links. Keep low-value combinations accessible to users without making every state an indexable search landing page.
Session IDs and user-specific parameters should never become stable crawl paths. Fix the application so anonymous crawlable links do not carry session state.
Audit parameter discovery from three sources: a site crawl, server logs, and Search Console. Logs reveal which patterns bots actually spend time on; crawls reveal which patterns the site can generate.
Avoid blanket robots.txt blocking before you understand canonical/indexing behavior. If Google cannot crawl a URL, it may not see its canonical or noindex directive. The best long-term fix is usually URL architecture plus internal-link discipline, not a growing list of emergency disallow rules.
