Design internal links as part of the content model before articles are published. A cluster should have explicit relationships, not just keyword-matched links added later.
Use four link types:
1. Hub to detail: the pillar or hub links to every important supporting page with descriptive anchor text that explains the subtopic.
2. Detail to hub: each supporting page links back to the canonical hub where a reader can move up to the broader concept.
3. Sibling links: supporting pages link to closely related pages when the next question naturally follows from the current section. Do not force every article to link to every other article.
4. Conversion or action links: pages should connect informational intent to the appropriate service, product, tool, or next-step page without turning every paragraph into a CTA.
Store these relationships as data where possible. For each content item, define primary topic, parent hub, related topics, recommended next pages, and conversion destination. That lets the CMS generate consistent related-content blocks and detect orphaned pages.
Use descriptive anchors rather than repeating an exact keyword unnaturally. The surrounding sentence should make clear why the destination helps.
Finally, audit the cluster as a graph: every important page should be reachable, no critical page should depend on one obscure link, and the hierarchy should make sense even if a crawler ignores navigation chrome. Internal linking works best when it reflects the information architecture users actually need.
