Segment sitemaps by meaningful content type or site section when that helps monitoring and scale. More importantly, include only URLs the system believes are canonical and indexable.
1. Generate sitemap entries from published status plus indexability rules, not simply every database record.
2. Exclude redirects, noindexed pages, previews, embeds, duplicate aliases, and noncanonical variants.
3. Use accurate lastmod values based on meaningful content updates rather than rewriting every timestamp daily.
4. Split large sitemap sets by content type or URL count and maintain a sitemap index when needed.
5. Use the same URL resolver as canonicals so sitemap and page metadata cannot disagree.
6. Expose diagnostics showing why a page is included or excluded.
A sitemap is a declaration of URLs worth indexing. Treat inclusion as a quality state, not as an automatic side effect of record creation.
